What Are GECs

Green Electricity Certificates (GECs) are China’s official energy attribute certificates, representing 1 MWh of electricity generated from renewable sources in mainland China. First introduced in 2017 for wind and solar, the program has since expanded into a nationwide scheme covering nearly all renewable technologies.

GEC Market Specifics

GECs serve as the only nationally recognized proof of renewable electricity use in mainland China, with each certificate issued and monitored through a unified platform overseen by the National Energy Administration (NEA). While participation in the GEC system is currently voluntary, interest has grown as companies set renewable electricity targets and respond to China’s evolving clean energy policies. GECs are available either unbundled or bundled with green power transactions, giving buyers flexibility in how they achieve their sustainability goals.

Retirement & Claiming Process

To make a renewable energy claim, a GEC must be retired. Retirement means the certificate is taken out of circulation and cannot be resold or reused. It ensures that the environmental benefit is counted only once and is linked to a specific reporting period or purpose. When purchasing through our Marketplace, redemption certificates can be downloaded directly from the platform.
